To become acquainted with the teacher and all other students, and to gain confidence in introductions and getting to know each other.

Personal aims:
To become acquainted with all students and to know all names by the end of the first day. Also, to gain an understanding of what the students have yet to learn and what they've already learned in the past.

Gather class into a circle. Introduce self. Go around the circle and have students one by one introduce themselves. A song and guitar might make this more interesting and put a fun face on drilling. If students don't yet have English names, then give each student an English name before this activity (allow another 5 minutes).

Introduce 15 items (or one for every student). Make the items things that most students might know or should know. Give each student an item. Tell them to hide it or put it in their pocket, backpacks, etc. Students will then go on a scavenger hunt. They will ask each other questions like "Do you have a ball?" and "Where is the cup?" Students will check an item off the list as they find it. (list can have pictures if the students cannot read but can speak)

Gather everyone together and go over the vocabulary again. Note what sentences students used to ask each other questions, or if they just said "ball?" and "hat?"

After this, write all the students names on the board. Introduce the spelling to everyone, and make sure that students can recognize their own name before moving on.

Hand out some alphabet sheets with pictures and go over the basics with students to introduce phonics and reading/writing... this is NOT the focus of the lesson

Break students into a few groups and ask them to come up with some things they know, and some things they don't know. To make it more fun (and easy to understand), actions should be pantomimed.

to know each other and a little about each other's interests, keeping it basic of course.

"My name is James. I like to eat." "My name is Sue. I like to play sports." "I am Bobby. I like to sing."
